We all love the convenience that the internet, the cloud, our PC and our tablets afford. However, power is constraining progress. This is not solely caused by demand but by the present chip technology reaching its physical limits; power/area is no longer constant with chip generation! A new technology, the Piezoelectronic Transistor, based on my scientific research has been developed which promises to decrease power by 100x as predicted by theory. Early experimental prototypes are promising. We have recently developed a scaling trajectory for device fabrication, taking PET form large but small figure of merit RF switches, to internet of things applications down to VLSI. Enabled by DARPA and EU Horizon 2020 funding, we are developing the PET along this pathway.
